The fake-food industry needs to put its money where its mouth is

Katherine Rich’s opinion piece on sugar (Look at lifestyle, not just sugar, Mar 24) is what you’d expect from a lobbyist for Big Food. She’s about as credible as the cigarette lobby was before the public finally silenced it with scorn.

Let’s first focus on where Rich is correct. Our dietary ills are not all due to sugar. There is a raft of other energy rich, nutrient light fake foods that her employers have perfected that have a similar effect. Try refined white bread and polished white rice for example, both of which quickly lead to a blood sugar spike and more stored fat.
